Phrasal verbs หรือ two-word verbs นิยมใช้กันมากในภาษาอังกฤษ ทั้งในภาษาพูดและภาษาเขียน  โครงสร้างของ Phrasal verbs ประกอบด้วยสองส่วน คือ คำกริยาและส่วนประกอบ verb +  preposition  or  particle put + out   =  put out  (to extinguish)           เมื่อใช้ในรูปประโยคและมีกรรม  ถ้ากรรมนั้นเป็นสรรพนามจะวางอยู่ระหว่าง verb  กับ  particle ตัวอย่างเช่น           Yesterday a fire broke out at the new market.  The firemen were able to put it out.   เมื่อวานนี้เกิดไฟไหม้ที่ตลาดใหม่  พนักงานดับเพลิงดับได้ทัน  ถ้ากรรมนั้นเป็นคำนามจะวางไว้หลัง preposition             The firemen were able to put out the fire at the new market. หรือวางไว้ระหว่าง  verb + particle ก็ได้             The firemen were able to put the fire out at the new market. พนักงานดับเพลิงดับไฟที่ตลาดใหม่ได้           สิ่งที่เป็นปัญหาในการแปล คือ เมื่อคำกริยาและส่วนประกอบมารวมกันเป็น Phrasal verbs แล้ว จะทำให้เกิดความหมายใหม่ขึ้นมาซึ่งอาจจะไม่มีเค้าความหมายของ   คำกริยาเดิมเลย การเรียนรู้คำเหล่านี้จึงนับว่ามีประโยชน์มากในการแปล อันที่จริงแล้ว Phrasal verbs มีอยู่มากมาย ส่วนที่นำมาไว้ในบทเรียนนี้เป็นเพียงส่วนน้อยโดยคัดเลือกมาจากคำที่ใช้อยู่บ่อย ๆ  วิธีแปล            อ่านประโยคหรือข้อความให้เข้าใจโดยพิจารณาจากปริบทดูว่า Phrasal verbs นั้น ใช้ในความหมายใด อาจใช้พจนานุกรมช่วยในการค้นหาความหมาย พจนานุกรมที่เกี่ยวกับPhrasal verbs โดยเฉพาะ มีหลายเล่ม เช่น              -  NTC’s Basic Phrasal Verbs. Harlow, Essex: Longman, 1995. -  Collins Cobuild.  London and Glasgow: Collins Publishers, 1990. ตัวอย่าง  Phrasal verbs 1.  break down 1.1      stop functioning This machine will break down if you don’t take care of it. เครื่องยนต์จะพังถ้าคุณไม่เอาใจใส่มัน 1.2     lose control of one’s emotions She broke down when she heard of her friend’s accident.           เธอควบคุมอารมณ์ไม่อยู่เมื่อได้ยินข่าวอุบัติเหตุของเพื่อน 1.3     to break something down (trans v.) The survey breaks down the population of Thailand region by region. การสำรวจประชากรของประเทศไทยแบ่งไปตามภาค 2. bring down 2.1      to cause to fall or come down After much hard bargaining, he brought the price down to 300 baht for the dress. หลังจากต่อรองกันอย่างหนัก เขาต่อราคาเสื้อชุดลงมาเหลือ  300 บาท 2.2     cause to be defeated, defeat This scandal could well bring the government down. เรื่องอื้อฉาวนี้สามารถทำให้รัฐบาลพ่ายแพ้ได้ทีเดียว 3. bring forward 3.1     propose or to show or produce for examination She brought forward a new proposal to her thesis adviser. เธอเสนอโครงร่างวิทยานิพนธ์ใหม่แก่อาจารย์ที่ปรึกษา 3.2     to  bring (something in the future) nearer to the present time The head of the department has brought the meeting forward to next Monday. หัวหน้าภาคเลื่อนการประชุมเข้ามาเป็นวันจันทร์หน้า 4. brush aside  =  to  disregard The official brushed aside the witness’s protest. เจ้าหน้าที่ไม่นำพาคำประท้วงของพยาน 5. brush up  =  to  improve He wants to brush up his knowledge of French before he goes to Paris. เขาต้องการฟื้นฟูความรู้ภาษาฝรั่งเศสก่อนที่จะไปปารีส     6.  build on 6.1      to make as an additional building This part of the house was built on later. ส่วนนี้ของบ้านต่อเติมขึ้นใหม่ 6.2     to use as a base for further development In the new job, he will be able to build on his previous experience in marketing.  เขาสามารถผนวกประสบการณ์เดิมด้านการตลาดเข้ากับงานใหม่ได้ 7.  build up  = to increase, develop or become gradually larger He has built up a good family business over the year.
